LOW-COST INTERNATIONAL CALLING

Cheap international calls to real phone numbers

Compare the call you actually need to make

Free app calls are hard to beat when both people use the same service. If you need a regular mobile or landline to ring, compare pay-as-you-go calling, country plans and your existing carrier allowance before you dial.

Eligible new accounts can try one 60-second call without adding a card.

For eligible new personal accounts and qualifying numbers priced at $0.99/min or less. The dialer confirms eligibility before you call.

What is actually cheapest for your call?

Start with how the other person can be reached and what you already pay for.

Both people use the same calling app

Use the free app call

WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar services can be the cheapest option when both sides can answer inside the same service and have a suitable internet connection.

Potential direct calling cost: Free. Internet/data costs may apply. Compare WhatsApp calling.

A regular phone number needs to ring

Compare pay-as-you-go rates

Use a phone-number calling service when you need to reach a mobile, landline, bank, hotel, airline, office or person who is not available inside the same app.

Talkala lets you check the rate and call from your browser. How pay-as-you-go calling works.

You call the same country frequently

Check a plan or minute bundle

A destination plan or bundle can cost less than per-minute credit when your calls are predictable and the numbers you need are covered.

Compare the covered numbers and expected usage with Rebtel or Viber Out.

Your mobile plan already includes the call

Use the allowance you already have

If your plan covers the destination and number type and you have minutes remaining, your carrier may involve no additional per-minute spending for that call.

Compare the main ways to call abroad

The cheapest method depends on whether you need a real phone number, how often you call and what you already pay for.

These categories can overlap. WhatsApp supports browser calls where available, but calls WhatsApp users. Viber Out uses mobile or desktop apps; Yolla and Talk360 document mobile-app workflows. Device and payment options vary by service.

Rebtel also supports phone-line/local-number calling in eligible countries. BOSS Revolution offers app/access-number calling and broader services, with plans and payment options that vary.

What makes an international call cheap?

The headline rate is only one part of the comparison.

  • The full destination number

Mobile, landline, special-number and carrier prefixes can have different rates. Compare the actual number where possible.

  • The per-minute rate

Check the price before connecting rather than relying only on a generic โ€œfromโ€ rate.

  • Billing increments and call duration

A per-minute price does not tell you the final total until you know how long the connected call lasts. Check how partial minutes are billed. Talkala rounds connected calls up to the next whole minute.

  • Plans, bundles and included minutes

A recurring plan can be good value for predictable usage. An existing allowance can cost nothing extra for a covered call.

  • Other applicable costs

Connection fees, checkout/service fees, mobile data, roaming data or local carrier charges can matter depending on the service and connection method.

How to compare two calling options fairly

  1. 1

    Use the same number

Compare the same destination, number type and full phone number where each service allows it.

  2. 2

    Compare the actual payment model

Include any prepaid rate, recurring plan, included allowance or applicable purchase fee.

  3. 3

Compare what you will actually use

A cheap bundle is not cheap if most of its minutes expire unused. A higher per-minute option may still cost less for one occasional call.

Cheap international calls: frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to make an international call?

If both people can use the same internet calling service, an app-to-app call can have no per-minute calling charge. If you need a regular mobile or landline to ring, compare the rate or allowance for that specific number. Pay-as-you-go services, calling plans and your existing carrier can each be cheapest in different situations.

How can I call a real phone number abroad cheaply?

Use a service that can reach regular mobiles and landlines and lets you check the applicable rate before calling. Compare the full number, number type, payment model and any extra charges rather than relying only on a headline starting price.

Are WhatsApp international calls free?

WhatsApp does not charge a per-minute fee for calls between WhatsApp users, although internet or mobile-data charges can apply. It is a strong option when both people can answer inside WhatsApp. It does not replace a normal phone-number call when you need an arbitrary mobile or landline to ring.

Is pay-as-you-go cheaper than a monthly international calling plan?

It depends on how often and where you call. Pay-as-you-go can suit occasional calls or changing destinations. A monthly plan or minute bundle can offer better value when you repeatedly call destinations it clearly covers.

Are mobile-carrier international calls always expensive?

No. Some plans include international destinations or offer suitable add-ons. If your existing allowance covers the call, using it may involve no additional per-minute charge. Check the destination, number type, calling location and remaining allowance.

Do mobile and landline international rates differ?

They can. Rates often depend on the destination network and number prefix. Check the full number where possible rather than assuming one country-wide rate applies to every phone.

Does the person I call need Talkala or internet?

No. For supported calls to a regular mobile or landline, the recipient answers through their normal phone service. The Talkala caller needs a suitable internet connection.

Does Talkala require a monthly calling subscription?

No. Core outbound calls use prepaid Talkala credit. Optional Talkala number features are separate and should not be confused with the calling balance.

Is Talkala always the cheapest option?

No. Rates vary by destination and number, and other services can offer free app calls, included carrier minutes or plans that better match frequent calling. Talkala is useful when its browser workflow and rate for the number you need make sense.

What should I check before comparing international calling rates?

Use the same destination and number type, then compare the applicable per-minute rate, billing increment, included minutes or subscription cost, and any relevant connection, purchase or connectivity charges.
