PREPAID CALLING GUIDE

Pay-as-you-go international calling

Add credit for calls, not another monthly calling plan

Use prepaid credit to call regular mobiles and landlines from your browser. Check the rate before dialing, understand how calls are billed and compare prepaid calling with a bundle or the minutes already in your phone plan.

Eligible new accounts can try one 60-second call without adding a card.

For eligible new personal accounts and qualifying numbers priced at $0.99/min or less. The dialer confirms eligibility before you call.

  • Calls regular mobiles and landlines
  • No monthly fee for core calling

Prepaid credit or a calling plan?

Start with how often you call and whether a plan covers the numbers you actually need.

Prepaid credit can suit you when

  • You make occasional calls or your usage changes each month
  • You call different destinations rather than one fixed country
  • You want to compare the rate before each call
  • You prefer buying credit instead of committing to a recurring minute bundle

A plan or included allowance can suit you when

  • You make regular calls to covered destinations
  • You expect to use enough of the included minutes
  • Your existing mobile plan already covers the call
  • The total plan cost works out better for your actual usage

Pay-as-you-go is not automatically cheaper. Check destination coverage, number types, minimum purchases, validity and any unused minutes before choosing. Compare broader calling methods.

How a prepaid call is charged

Adding credit and paying for a particular call are different steps. Here is the sequence for a paid Talkala call.

  1. 1

    Add credit

Your purchased balance becomes available after the payment is confirmed. The checkout total and the credit added are not necessarily identical when taxes or discounts apply.

  2. 2

Check the number and available balance

Review the rate before dialing. Talkala can reserve part of your available credit while a paid call is in progress. That reservation is not an extra fee.

  3. 3

    Review the final charge

The final call record determines the charge. Talkala settles it against your balance and releases any unused reservation. Check the result in Call history and Wallet activity.

A per-minute rate is not a per-second charge

Talkala currently rounds connected calls up to whole minutes. For example, 1 minute and 10 seconds is billed as 2 minutes.

Compare the payment models

Some services offer more than one model. Compare the terms you would actually use, not just the label. A bundle can itself be prepaid.

Before you add credit

Minimum purchase and checkout total
Personal top-ups start at $5 USD. Check the currency, credit amount and final checkout total before paying.
Manual or automatic refills
You can add credit manually or enable Smart Auto Top-up with a saved card and your chosen threshold and refill amount. Automatic refills are separate from a monthly calling subscription. A qualifying usage charge must take the balance from at or above the threshold to below it. Enabling it while your balance is already low does not immediately charge your card. How automatic refills work.
Unused credit and refunds
Check the validity of paid and promotional credit before adding more than you expect to use. Refund requests follow Talkalaโ€™s published policy and are reviewed through support. Read the Terms and Refund Policy.
Optional features and connectivity
A Talkala number is optional and rented separately through a monthly subscription. Related usage can also draw from prepaid balance. Your internet provider may charge for data independently of Talkala. More about the wallet and optional features.

Frequently asked questions

What does pay-as-you-go international calling mean?

You pay according to your calling usage instead of relying solely on a recurring minute package. This guide focuses on prepaid services, where you add credit before paid calls. Other usage-based services may bill afterward.

Is prepaid credit the same as a calling bundle?

No. Calling credit is a balance spent at the applicable usage rate. A bundle covers specified calls or minutes under its own terms. A service can offer both, so check which option you are buying.

Is pay-as-you-go cheaper than a monthly calling plan?

It depends on your destinations and usage. Prepaid credit can avoid paying for a bundle you rarely use. A plan or allowance can be better value when it covers the calls you regularly make.

What is Talkalaโ€™s minimum top-up?

Personal top-ups start at $5 USD. This buys credit rather than setting the price of one call. Check the credit amount and final checkout total, including any applicable tax, before paying.

Can I try Talkala before adding credit?

Eligible new personal accounts with zero available balance can try one free 60-second call before their first paid top-up, without adding a card. Qualifying numbers must cost $0.99/min or less. The dialer checks eligibility and availability. This is a limited first-call offer, not an ongoing free calling plan.

Why does my available balance change before a call is finished?

Talkala can temporarily reserve credit for a paid call. That is separate from the final charge. Once billing is settled, any unused reserved amount becomes available again.

What if the call does not connect?

A call that never connects does not create a final call charge under Talkalaโ€™s current billing rules. A brief connection can still be billable. Check the call record and contact support if the outcome looks wrong.

Is automatic top-up a subscription?

It is a separate setting that authorizes credit purchases when the configured conditions are met, not a package of monthly calling minutes. Check whether it is enabled before assuming every refill will be manual.

Does prepaid calling credit always last indefinitely?

No universal rule applies across providers or credit types. Check paid-credit validity, inactivity terms and bonus conditions before buying. For Talkala, ask support to confirm the conditions for your credit before adding more than you expect to use.

How can I query a call charge or request a refund?

Contact Talkala support and check the published Refund Policy. Include the relevant payment or call details. Do not assume unused credit or a quality complaint creates an automatic refund.
