Pricing research

How Talkala international calling prices compare with carrier rates

Carriers bury international rates in PDFs, change them without warning, and rarely explain what their numbers actually include. This page shows ours. It documents the methodology behind our pricing claims: the route checks we compared, the carriers we used, the sources we pulled, and where the numbers hold up less cleanly.

The short version

Benchmark-backed route checks, not a universal promise.
Broad claim backed by 529 of 661 checked default-rate routes.
The 150x figure is a real single-route example, not the headline number.

Key takeaways

What the research shows, in plain terms

Need context on what these claims do and do not cover? Read how to read the benchmark claims.

Broad claims

Across 661 checked default-rate routes

  • Lower on about 4 in 5 benchmarked default-rate route checks.
  • 80.0% of checked routes: we cost less.
  • Typical saving of about 75% when Talkala came in lower.
  • About 4x cheaper on a typical checked route.

Extreme cases

Real, not typical

  • Up to 150x cheaper than traditional carrier rates on select routes.
  • Some routes were about 99% cheaper.
  • Some carriers charge $3.00/min for routes we price at $0.02/min.

By region

Where the data is strongest

  • Europe: 83.2% of checked routes we cost less. The broadest, most solid part of the research.
  • Oceania: 82.5% of checked routes we cost less, with a typical winning-route saving of 77.1%.
  • North America: typical saving of about 89% on routes where we were cheaper. The most dramatic region, though on a smaller sample.

Transparency

What carriers won't show you

  • We checked 661 benchmarked default-rate carrier route prices and documented every source.
  • Most carriers do not publish this kind of comparison. We do, because the claims should stand up.

At a glance

661 routes checked. We are cheaper in 529 of them.

Every source linked.

We show our work. Traditional carriers do not.

We checked. Here's what we found.Reviewed 27 April 2026

Route checks

661

We compared 661 benchmarked default-rate route checks from published carrier rate sheets.

Times we were cheaper

529

In 529 of those route checks, Talkala cost less.

How often we were cheaper

80.0%

That works out to about 4 out of 5 benchmarked route checks.

Typical saving

75.1%

When Talkala was cheaper, the typical saving was 75.1%.

Largest difference found

150x

The biggest gap in the research was 150x on one benchmarked route.

The number behind the main claim

The headline figure uses the core default-rate benchmark: conclusive published carrier route checks with enough source quality to support a public comparison.

Why the region section uses a different view

The region charts use the same core default-rate slice grouped by benchmark origin region. It gives a more honest picture of where the research is deep, where it gets thinner, and where the biggest route-level gaps show up.

How this benchmark was built

What these claims are based on

This page is based on published carrier prices. We checked the rates, matched them against the same Talkala route, and then used the cleanest parts of that research for the claims on this page.

Where we checked prices

12 countries

We reviewed carrier prices across North America, South America, Europe, Oceania, Asia, and Africa.

Carrier plans checked

16 plans

That includes T-Mobile, AT&T Prepaid, Bell, TELUS, BT, Proximus, Telstra, Optus, and M1.

Total comparisons reviewed

942 price checks

We reviewed a larger set first, then used smaller clean groups for the exact claims on this page.

  • The main headline on this page uses 661 benchmarked default-rate route checks. Those are the cleanest rows for the broad public claim, not every row in the wider research pack.
  • For each route, we matched a published carrier price with the Talkala rate for the same destination and route type.
  • The region charts below use that same 661-route core slice, grouped by origin region so you can see where the data is strong and where it is thinner.
  • The proof table below shows selected route checks where Talkala came in at 40x cheaper or more.

Origin-market territory view

Here is how the results looked in each region we checked

One global number is useful, but it hides a lot. This section shows where the research was broad, where it was thinner, and where the biggest price differences showed up.

Cheaper rate shareBar chart

Where we were cheaper most often

This chart answers one simple question: in each region we checked, how often was Talkala cheaper?

What this chart measures

How often Talkala was cheaper

How to read it

Each bar is one region. The note under it shows how many route checks we reviewed there.

Europe83.2%

488 route checks

Oceania82.5%

40 route checks

North America72.2%

97 route checks

Africa55.6%

36 route checks

Europe and Oceania are the broad, sturdy parts of the benchmark. North America is where the biggest route-level explosions happen, just on a smaller sample.

Typical savingBar chart

Where the usual savings were biggest

This one is about the usual saving, not the biggest outlier. It shows the typical saving in each region when Talkala was cheaper.

What this chart measures

Typical saving in each region

How to read it

Higher bars mean the usual saving was larger in that region.

Europe73.5%

Typical price difference: 3.78x

Oceania77.1%

Typical price difference: 4.36x

North America89%

Typical price difference: 9.10x

Africa68.2%

Typical price difference: 3.60x

North America gets the most dramatic when it wins. Europe and Oceania look more balanced, which is exactly why they matter for a broad claim.

Not every region has the same amount of data behind it. This chart shows how many route checks we reviewed in each region.

How to read it

More checks means a stronger read on that region. Thin samples are still worth seeing, but they should be treated more carefully.

Thin-region note

Regions only appear here when the core default-rate benchmark has enough conclusive route checks to make the card useful. Thin slices are better left out than dressed up as complete market coverage.

Typical vs maximum

The usual result was much lower. The 150x result was the extreme case.

Both numbers are real. They just aren't the same kind of number. The broad claim comes from 661 checked routes. The 150x figure comes from one of them.

  • Broad claim: our price was lower in 529 of 661 checked cases.
  • Typical result: when we were cheaper, the typical saving was 75.1%.
  • Largest example: 150x on a U.S. T-Mobile to Romania landline comparison.

Scope limitations

This page uses benchmarked default-rate route checks. It is not a promise that every live route, carrier, and number type will show the same saving.
The main headline and the region charts use the core default-rate benchmark slice. Other research slices are broader or narrower and should not be mixed into the headline claim.
Examples like 150x are real, but they are extreme cases, not the usual result.
Regions with thinner source coverage should be read as directional proof, not as complete market coverage.

Common questions

Related questions

Does this page cover mobile calling rates too?

Yes, where the underlying carrier benchmark cleanly identifies a mobile or default route check. The page still keeps the route type visible because mobile, landline, mixed, and default-rate rows are not the same thing.

What does the 80.0% number actually mean?

In 529 of 661 benchmarked default-rate route checks, Talkala cost less. That is where the "about 4 in 5" line comes from.

Are the territory charts based on the same benchmark?

Yes. The headline uses the core default-rate benchmark, and the territory charts use that same core slice grouped by origin region so you can see where the research is broad and where it gets thinner.

Next step

Now check the route you actually care about

Benchmarks are nice. Your real route matters more. Check the current per-minute rate before you sign up or place the call.
