Mobile numbers
Use +39 and the mobile number beginning with 3. Ordinary mobile numbers have 9 or 10 digits; new assignments use 10. Do not add a landline area code.
Italy uses +39, a calling code also used by Vatican City. Dial +39 followed by the complete number. For a landline, keep the opening zero and area code; mobile numbers begin with 3 and do not take a landline area code.

International format
+39 + complete number; keep a landline's 0
Do not automatically remove a starting 0: for Italian landlines it stays after +39, as part of the area code. Keep the area code even for a number in the same city.

Keep the opening 0 and area code after +39. They are part of the complete domestic number. Geographic numbers have 6 to 10 digits, with certain ranges allowing 11; do not shorten or pad them to one length.
These instructions cover ordinary mobile and landline numbers. Short codes, emergency numbers and special services use separate numbering rules.
Common questions
Use + notation in Talkala. On a carrier phone, the international access prefix depends on where you call from and your carrier; it is not always 00. That access prefix replaces the plus sign, not the 39 country-code digits.
Open the Talkala phone, enter the number and create an account when you're ready to call. You can prepare your call before signing up, and the person answering doesn't need Talkala.
Talkala currently lists calls to Italy from $0.04/min for landlines and $0.10/min for mobiles. These are starting rates in Talkala's default public price list. A number's carrier or prefix can change the final rate, which is confirmed before calling. Prices use the default United States caller ID, not your physical location.
Eligible accounts with no available credit and no completed paid top-up may receive one free call of up to 60 seconds. The final rate for that call must be $0.99/min or less. Account and destination eligibility are checked before calling. See all free-minute conditions.
