Mobile numbers
Ordinary mobile numbers have 10 or 11 digits after +49. Keep the mobile prefix: 15, 160, 162, 163 or 17. Domestic 0164, 0168 and 0169 are paging ranges, not ordinary mobile numbers.
+49 is the country calling code used for Germany. Replace the domestic opening 0 with +49. Keep the area code for a landline or the mobile prefix; German numbers do not all have the same length.

International format
+49 + area or mobile prefix + subscriber number
Remove only the domestic opening 0 when adding +49. Keep the area or mobile prefix and every subscriber digit. For example, Berlin's domestic area prefix 030 becomes +49 30; this is an incomplete prefix, not a phone number.

Include the two- to five-digit area code, without its domestic opening 0, and the complete subscriber number. New geographic numbers normally have 11 digits after +49; individual numbers in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich use 10. Older shorter numbers remain in use, so do not pad a number to one fixed length.
These instructions cover ordinary mobile and landline numbers. Short codes, emergency numbers and special services use separate numbering rules.
Common questions
Use + notation in Talkala. On a carrier phone, the international access prefix depends on where you call from and your carrier; it is not always 00. That access prefix replaces the plus sign, not the 49 country-code digits.
Open the Talkala phone, enter the number and create an account when you're ready to call. You can prepare your call before signing up, and the person answering doesn't need Talkala.
Talkala currently lists calls to Germany from $0.04/min for landlines and $0.68/min for mobiles. These are starting rates in Talkala's default public price list. A number's carrier or prefix can change the final rate, which is confirmed before calling. Prices use the default United States caller ID, not your physical location.
Eligible accounts with no available credit and no completed paid top-up may receive one free call of up to 60 seconds. The final rate for that call must be $0.99/min or less. Account and destination eligibility are checked before calling. See all free-minute conditions.
